Common Questions about Counseling

Taking the first step towards the healing process takes courage. Congratulations for making it this far. If you’ve never received help from a counselor or therapist before, it’s natural to have questions about the process and what to expect. Here are a few common questions I hear from counseling clients.
When and where do you see counseling clients?
I am currently accepting new clients on Thursdays. The first appointment is at 9am and the last appointment for the day is at 5pm. Sessions last 50 minutes. I currently see counseling clients virtually via a HIPAA-compliant platform.
You can book a session online here.
What types of clients do you see?
In my counseling practice, I help individual adults and couples with many mental health issues, including:
What happens in the first counseling session?
In our first 50 minutes together, I want to learn about you, hear your story, and understand why you made the decision to come to counseling. Based on our initial conversation, we will build goals for our time together and discuss a plan and process for getting there. Speaking of goals, my overall goal in our first session is to create a space where clients feel valued, honored, and open.
I start with listening. Showing compassion and empathy. Creating a space where you can safely, and without judgement, tell your story. I don’t know your story, your pain, your struggles or shame or disappointments, but I do know peace can be found in the healing process. My commitment to my clients is to create a safe, compassionate, and empathetic environment where we build mutual trust.
How can I pay for my counseling sessions?
Counseling sessions are $75 per 50-minute session. I do not bill insurance directly to help in keeping your mental health information confidential. My counseling sessions are private pay and payable at the time of service. I accept PayPal, Venmo, and Zelle.
When will I start to see positive changes and how often do I need to see you?
Counseling is not a one-size-fits-all process. In our first session together, we will devise a plan based on your needs and goals for seeking personal or couples counseling. Initially, many clients find value in meeting weekly as we build trust and take steps towards working on our developed plan.
Due to empathetic listening and understanding, some clients experience feelings of relief after the first counseling session. However, keep in mind that the process is different for everyone. Lasting changes take time to take hold.
